En route daily between Seattle and Los Angeles, the Coast Starlight passes through Portland, Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area and Santa Barbara. Portland is a laid-back city that takes a few things very seriously: bicycles, books, and smoked meat. The city has an impressive cycling network that leaves the bike-less traveller looking on mournfully as happy people tear across the city's many bridges. In Portland you will find the most delicious ribs and sausage on earth, and a used bookstore that should have its own ZIP code. The historic White Eagle tavern is worth a visit. It is also an excellent choice of accommodation if you fancy a chance encounter with one of the spirits alleged to haunt the place since its wild days as a bootlegger's den and upstairs brothel.
